Five day Loreto access fly in trip What are the benefits of this Loreto access trip to Laguna Ojo de Liebre versus our three day weekend trip or the five day drive down trip? Less road time compared to the drive down trip. More whale watching compared to the three day Air charter weekend.

Other benefits include flexibility in your scheduling. Our trips have specific departure dates and times, but you can choose to arrive in Loreto earlier or to stay in Loreto following your Laguna Ojo de Liebre whale watching adventure. You have the option of spending time on the warmer east coast of Baja in resort style accommodations. Shopping, snorkel in warm sub-tropical water, scuba diving in relatively pristine areas and other water activities are readily available in Loreto.

Baja Jones Adventure Travel is committed to providing the World’s Greatest whale watching experiences. Our focus is the Gray Whale and the environment in which these animals live. Nobody provides more in depth talks or more current information about the species. Like hundreds before you, you will leave knowing more about the species than many marine biologists.

We are the only tour operator currently providing Loreto access to Laguna Ojo de Liebre.  All other Loreto access whale watching tours travel to either Magdalena Bay or to San Ignacio.  Read further below for additional comparison of these various locations and the highlights of each location.

5 day itinerary for Loreto Air Access trips

Day #1: We meet you at the Loreto Airport at 2:00 PM local time, once you have passed through immigration and customs. From there we travel to Guerrero Negro. Expected arrival time in Guerrero Negro is 7:00 PM local time. We eat dinner, discuss whales and answer questions until 8:30 or 9:00.

Day #2:Meet for breakfast and then travel a quick 30 minutes to Laguna Ojo de Liebre (formerly known as Scammon's Lagoon) where we will spend the day whale watching, lunch will be served by the friendly Baja Jones crew. You will probably enjoy whale spouting just offshore while you eat a leisurely lunch.  Then a second trip out onto the lagoon will finish a great day of whale watching. Dinner tonight is a private bar-b-que at the Baja Jones residence so that we can provide an in depth discussion about the Gray Whales.  The menu is diverse and abundant, providing plentiful choices for vegetarians as well as meat eaters.   Thick juicy American style steaks, breast of chicken filets, corn on the cob, delightful salads, Baja Jones developed specials including fruit stuffed roasted bell peppers, bar-b-que roasted potato wedges, and our signature honey roasted sweet onions.

Day #3 : Meet for breakfast. Today we venture to the outer lagoon near the entrance. We expect to see more mating adults, possibly closer views of breaching. Afterwards we will relax at Marios Palapa restaurant and enjoy a truly nice meal. Margarita's, sea food and a nice sunset will end another exciting day of whale watching. Time permitting those who aren't too tired can take an interesting ride to El Faro (the lighthouse)for birdwatching and sight seeing.

Day #4 : We return to the inner observation area today for a repeat of day #2.  For those interested, Keith will speak more about gray whale anatomy and thermal regulation mechanisms using as a prop, the 46 foot female skeleton that was assembled near the visitors resource center.   In the background, offshore, you will probably be able to view mother whales spouting, surfacing and feeding their babies.

Day #5 : All good trips eventually end. This is our travel back to Loreto day. A leisurely ride to Loreto gives everyone in the group the opportunity to trade addresses while observing the interesting Vizcaino Desert scenery.

Three wonderful days of whale watching at the World’s Greatest Whale Watching location. The only place where over a thousand gray whales gather every December through April to mate and to give birth. No other location, anywhere can make this claim. No other Baja lagoon has even half as many whales present at any time. No other location has scores of gray whales present from before Christmas continuing past Easter.

The best and most northerly location is Laguna Ojo de Liebre.

Average whale count exceeds 1,500 at peak of the season.
Less permitted whale watching boats than either of other two locations.
Easy access to 2 observation areas, average 25 minutes from town.
Going north, many whales stop here after leaving the other lagoons.
Gray whales present from late December through late April.
Inside of and regulated by Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve plus Mexican Fisheries.
Strict enforcement of whale watching regulations.
Baja Jones normally provides two whale watch trips each day of two hours each.
Standard five day trip cost is on low to mid point of all trips to all locations.

The next best location is San Ignacio Lagoon.

Average whale count 200 to 400 at peak of season.
From the town of San Ignacio, daily access is 3 to 4 hour drive round trip.
Easy access only if you stay at a tent or cabana camp along the lagoon shore..
The original "friendly whale" myth started here.
Gray whales present from mid-January to mid-March depending on the year.
Inside of and regulated by Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve plus Mexican Fisheries.
Regulations enforced in manner similar to Laguna Ojo de Liebre..
Some tours provide two whale trips daily, others only one trip each day.
Standard five day trip cost to this location is highest of all trips to all locations.

The third best location is Magdalena Bay.

Average whale count is 200 to 400 at peak of season.
Access from Loreto is by a 4 to 5 hour daily round trip van ride, then only one, two or three hour whale watch.
Friendly and close encounters take place here as well as the other 2 locations.
Kayak tours still sell Mag Bay trips but regulations forbid kayaking with whales. These trips may only provide one or two panga whale watch trips total. Remainder of your time is spent paddling away from gray whales.
Less enforcement of regulations. Outside protected Vizcaino Biosphere Reserve. Boat drivers may have lower skill level and whale presence as other locations

Standard five day trip cost is on low to mid point of all trips to all locations
