View of camp as we motor away for our first exciting day of narwhal watching.
first arctic morn 2.5 wide.jpg (24083 bytes)
The first morning couldn't have been nicer.  There was no wind, so the water was mirror-like.
  first iceberg 2.5 wide.jpg (18382 bytes)
This was the first iceberg we saw as we headed to Milne Inlet.  There was almost always a berg in sight.
  narwhal tusk visible 2.5 wide.jpg (33898 bytes)
Look closely and you can see the tusk visible just below the surface of the water.

On our second whale watch day we observed a steady passing stream of narwhals for 25 minutes.
  narwhal close 2.5 wide.jpg (42057 bytes)
From our observation point at Bruce Head we were sometimes within 20 feet of the passing narwhal.
  ring seal 2.5 wide.jpg (25193 bytes)
Curious Ring Seals watched us watching them.  Several times these rascals swam beneath our boat.
iceberg 2.5 wide.jpg (29161 bytes)
Getting too close to an iceberg can be dangerous.   Notice the newly calved baby bergs to the right.
  robertson river 2.5 wide.jpg (27947 bytes)
Arctic Char must conquer the falls in order to reach the lake where they will spawn.
        char near record 2.5 high.jpg (35383 bytes)
16 lbs 8 ozs. Arctic Char was 12 oz short of the line class record for 2 lb. line.  Fish to 19 lbs were taken
arctic char 2.5 wide.jpg (34536 bytes)
Look closely and you can see the dark images which are the hundreds (thousand?) of Arctic Char that we saw swimming just below the falls.  They gather here and build their courage to swim up the falls in order to reach the lake where they will spawn.  We saw huge char that must have weighed 40 pounds or more.
  fox prints 2.5 high.jpg (19511 bytes)
Arctic fox prints on the beach.  We never saw the fox who made these, but these prints were fresh.
In late September or October I will be loading many more prints from this trip onto the website. To get more info about our 2006 August trip to see the narwhal click here As soon as I receive the trip log from our trip's unofficial biographer, Katie Yelenick, I will place that on line.
