You can enjoy observing the Osprey of Baja California while
along on one of our whale watching trips..
Here at Baja Jones our main
focus is Central Baja. This page is designed to tell you about the opportunities
available for bird watching and especially for viewing the Osprey in the wild.
Nesting Osprey are easily seen while traveling with us to Guerrero Negro and Laguna Ojo de
Liebre in Baja. Generally most people are satisfied with the one or two afternoons
of bird watching that we offer as side trips during our regular gray whale watching
tours. For those who want a more intensive bird experience, that can be arranged and
we usually work closely to tailor the trip to what you hope to see.
Osprey still searching
for a mate:
/bigger> Those of you who have been reading my newsletter for several years know about
my osprey. Nicknamed Junior he was born in the winter of 2002. In the summer
of 2002 my friend Bob (Bob also drives our Baja Jones Adventures groups from San Diego)
and I erected a 30 foot tall pole in my yard in Guerrero Negro. The pole has a platform on
top. Junior came from another pole nest about 500 yards southeast of my house. I was able
to watch him learn to fly and then he began using my platform as a resting spot to eat his
fish.
In 2003 Junior brought twigs and nest building materials to the platform. Since then he
has continued to call out and search for a mate, but so far without success. I dont
know if this is because he is still not mature enough to attract a mate or if his really
poor nest building skills have something to do with it.
Junior still visits the platform. Sometimes he sleeps on it. Other
times I wont see him for several days in a row. And sometimes hell be there
early, eat a fish and sun himself after a morning of fishing.
Ill report more about our osprey project as there is more to report. I keep hoping
he will succeed in finding a mate. My next Osprey project would then be to build a taller
tower/blind that would allow me to climb up above the nest and photograph and observe the
family going about their daily osprey chores.
Photos coming soon
There are scores of nesting osprey in the vicinity.
