cave painting with kid.jpg (35145 bytes) These two photos are from a rock site near Catavina.  This is an easy access site.   Particularly suited for youngsters. The colors of some of the drawings are so bright, I always wonder if vandals have retouched them.   Be sure and request our free CD and brochure.  Loads of information and great cave painting photos.  cave catavina.jpg (31090 bytes)
The paint used was primarily mixed from minerals. Red was made from hematite or red ochre. White came from gypsum or diatomaceous earth. Black was mixed from either charcoal or manganese oxide. These minerals were ground into a fine powder and then  mixed with a binder.   The binder is what transports the minerals to the painted area.  It was either water, animal fat or ground up vegetation.  The painters used their fingers or they used brushed made from animal skin or animal hairs. The cave painting trips are best in April or May or October, November or December.   Total length of the trip is six or seven days.

Las Montanas de San Francisquito

This trip is all inclusive.  We supply transportation, food, lodging &  tents.  If you don't have a sleeping bag let us know and we'll furnish one.  April and May are terrific times in Baja.  The weather is warm to hot depending on where we are, but it can be very cool in the evenings.  Winter has passed and we no longer expect rain in the mountains.

There are two trip access options.   Each option has advantages and disadvantages.

Loreto access:  You take a regularly scheduled airline to Loreto, BCS, Mexico and we meet you at the airport for the start of your adventure.  This option allows you the most time at the southern cave painting sites and the least time traveling.  Cost for this six day trip is  $1,295 per person.

San Diego access: We meet at the Holiday Inn-Bayside in San Diego and travel through Baja together.  This option means more over the road travel, but allows you to visit many interesting areas of the Baja Peninsula.  Cost for this 7 day trip is $1,595 per person.

Each of these trips requires a minimum of 4 people to schedule a date.  Or if there are less than 4 we'll gladly do the trip, but the price would be correspondingly higher.

If you have an interest in this trip,  email us and we'll send you some additional information.  I guarantee that we will visit portions of Baja that very few people ever travel to.   Most of these cave sites are well off the traveled path.  Most Baja tourists see the signs to these locations, but choose not to take the side trip because of their fear of traveling alone to these remote locations.  Baja Jones groups travel with a satellite cell phone in case of vehicle problems.  Our driver/guides are first aid/CPR trained.
Loreto Access sample itinerary

Day#1:   We meet at the Loreto airport.  From there we drive directly to the trailhead for the cave paintings.  We'll camp at the trailhead tonight.

Day#3,4, 5: We'll spend the next few days camping at night in the most remote and unpopulated area imaginable.  The hike down into the oasis canyon requires 4 hours of steady walking and scrambling down some rocky inclines.   Each day we will visit a different cave or rock wall location with in the canyon.

Day #6: We'll travel south to Loreto and leave you at the airport.  You will make you own air plans for the return to the USA.  There are several choices and we can help you decide
