Whale Watching in Loreto & the Sea of Cortez
Encounter blue whales - Earth's largest animals - in Jacques Cousteau's "Aquarium of the World"
Why Whale Watching in Loreto & the Sea of Cortez Is Unforgettable
The Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) near Loreto is one of the most biodiverse bodies of water on Earth. Jacques Cousteau famously called it "The World's Aquarium," and for good reason - this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to over 900 fish species and one-third of the world's marine mammal species, making Whale Watching in Loreto unlike anywhere else on the planet.
Loreto, Baja California Sur sits on the shore of this remarkable ecosystem, making it the perfect base for encountering the planet's largest animal - the blue whale. These magnificent creatures, reaching up to 100 feet long and weighing 200 tons, visit the Sea of Cortez to feed on abundant krill from January through April.
Beyond blue whales, Loreto's waters host fin whales (the second-largest whale), humpback whales, gray whales during migration, countless dolphins, sea lions, manta rays, and mobula rays. The combination of incredible wildlife, crystal-clear waters, and dramatic island landscapes creates an unparalleled whale watching experience.

Blue Whales: The Giants of Loreto
Encountering Earth's Largest Animal
Blue whales are unfathomably massive. At up to 100 feet long and 200 tons, they're larger than any dinosaur that ever lived. Their hearts weigh as much as a small car, and their tongues can weigh as much as an elephant. Seeing one of these magnificent giants surface near your boat is a life-changing experience.
The Sea of Cortez provides optimal feeding conditions for blue whales. Deep underwater trenches create upwellings that bring nutrient-rich waters to the surface, supporting massive blooms of krill - the tiny shrimp-like crustaceans that blue whales feed on exclusively.
During feeding, blue whales can consume 4-6 tons of krill per day. They use a feeding technique called lunge feeding, where they accelerate toward krill swarms with their mouths open, engulfing huge volumes of water and prey. Watching this feeding behavior is spectacular.

About Loreto, Baja California Sur
Loreto is a charming coastal town on the eastern shore of the Baja Peninsula, facing the Sea of Cortez. Founded in 1697, it's one of Mexico's oldest European settlements and was Baja California's first capital. Today, it's a peaceful destination known for world-class sportfishing, stunning natural beauty, and proximity to the Loreto Bay National Marine Park.
The Loreto Bay National Marine Park protects 800 square miles of the Sea of Cortez, including five major islands: Coronado, Carmen, Danzante, Montserrat, and Santa Catalina. These islands create protected channels where krill concentrates, attracting blue whales and other marine life.
Beyond whales, Loreto offers beautiful beaches, excellent snorkeling and diving, sea kayaking among islands, hiking in the Sierra de la Giganta mountains, and authentic Mexican culture. The town maintains its colonial charm with a beautiful mission, plaza, and traditional architecture.
